25 Casual Denim Outfits for Fall 2024

Fall has finally arrived here in the northeast, and I’m having fun making new outfit combinations and updating old favorites. Today I’ve rounded up 25 of my favorite casual fall outfits for your style inspiration!

I pretty much live in jeans, so denim is the foundation for all of these casual fall looks, but you can always swap out the jeans for pants if you need work wear ideas. And of course, you can always add other elements or swap out some of these pieces to better suit your personal style.

I did my best to link similar styles for the items that have sold out, and similar for less options for the pricer pieces, but the idea here is to shop your closet, so hopefully it’s not too frustrating when you can’t purchase the exact pieces.

25 Fall Outfits to Copy Right Now

#1. All the cool girls are wearing crew neck t-shirts under their sweaters this fall, and I love the way this basic white tee updates this classic navy cable knit crewneck sweater. The warm brown accessories are a nice contrast against the cool tones of the navy blue sweater and light wash denim.

#2. One of my favorite casual fall outfit formulas is to wear an olive utility jacket over a black or white tee with light wash jeans and fashion sneakers. This year, shorter jackets are trending, and this Z Supply All Day Stretch Twill Jacket in a dusty green is a new favorite. It’s more of a shirt jacket, with the lightweight cotton blend fabric and shirttail hem, and I like how it looks over a black tee with boot crop jeans and VEJA sneakers.

#3. This is a more elevated variation on that classic fall outfit formula, with an evergreen utility jacket in a longer, leaner silhouette. I wore it with a white tee this time, and leveled it up with trouser jeans and cognac booties. I coordinated the bag and belt with my boots for a cohesive look.

#4. While green is the most traditional color for a utility jacket, there are lots of other color options available these days. This beige twill jacket is from Talbots, and it’s such a nice versatile neutral. I’ve worn it quite a few times this fall. It looks really nice over green and blue, but here I wore it with a stripe sweater vest. To keep the look somewhat elevated, I wore bootcut jeans and cognac booties.

#5. I also like to have a black twill jacket in my fall closet because I wear a lot of cool tones that pair well with black, and it works well with my hair color and skin tone. This year, I added this Rails Alma Jacket, with the band collar and drawstring hem. Here’s just one way I’ve worn it, over a burgundy smocked tee with wide leg jeans and croc embossed mules.

#6. And navy is another classic color that works well with more casual looks. This Caslon Crop Utility Jacket is low inventory, but I found a similar option that is also a really good price.

I like to wear my navy jacket with a white or grey tee and light wash jeans. I just think this monochromatic palette is so pleasing to the eye. In this case, I wore brown loafer mules to warm up the look, and I like how they create a bookend along with my brown hair. I would also wear a brown belt to finish the outfit, but I forgot to bring one along to this photo shoot.

#7. Speaking of navy toppers, cardigans are making a comeback this fall, especially the ones that are a play on the lady jacket. This Caslon collared cardigan is a nice option. I like the point collar and contrasting buttons. Similar to the look above, I styled this navy cardigan over a grey tee with mid-wash straight leg jeans, but this time I opted for sneakers with navy accents, and I added brown elements with my belt and handbag.

#8. Another fun casual fall outfit formula I like to reinvent each season is pairing a hoodie with a bomber jacket or longline wool-blend coat. Just add jeans and boots or sneakers, for a complete outfit that always looks super chic.

#9. Here’s another option, with a gray ribbed cashmere hoodie and a burgundy puffer jacket.

#10. I also styled the same hoodie in camel with a black quilted vest, straight leg jeans, and red suede shoes.

#11. Speaking of quilted vests, I loved this preppy green J.Crew Excursion Vest last year. I think it looks so casual-chic over the ivory fisherman sweater with bootcut blue jeans and brown lug sole booties. With how popular green is this season, I’m surprised they didn’t bring that vest back, but this Quilted Barn Vest in the Rich Olive is a nice option. I also like the Gap Factory ColdControl Puffer Vest in Olive Night.

#12. To bring it down to a more casual level, I swapped out the cashmere sweater for a waffle tee, and I wore straight leg jeans with field sneakers. I like how this vest has a more casual, rugged vibe to complement the thermal tee and sneakers. My plum color is from last year, but I love this year’s Olive Night, or the Black is a classic.

#13. Chocolate brown and dark wash denim are a classic yet modern pairing that works especially well for fall. I paired this chocolate brown corduroy shirt jacket with a simple ivory sweater tank, and wore it with dark rinse bootcut jeans. I went for a lighter shade of caramel brown in the boots and bag to add some dimension to the ensemble.

#14. I also like this lighter-weight look, with the chocolate brown cowl neck short sleeve top, boot crop jeans, and camel suede mules. This was a mild fall day, so I brought along my brown bomber jacket, although I didn’t end up needing it.

#15. This was one of my favorite looks from last fall, with a brown plaid wool bomber jacket, bootcut jeans, and boots. I found a similar jacket at Evereve, so I recreated the look for this year.

#16. Barn jackets are also having a moment this fall, and this is a similar outfit with the J.Crew Short Barn Jacket in English ripstop cotton in Mossy Brown. I went with wide leg jeans for more of a modern look, and I love these croc embossed mules for transition season.

#17. While a third piece always elevates your look, I often keep it simple. You can’t go wrong with a black top, blue jeans, and leopard pumps. The key is wear pieces that have some interesting details, whether it be a print (these shoes), added texture (the ribbed top), or elements like a collar or buttons (in the top). I also carried a brown bag rather than the more expected black to add some contrast, and I like how it relates to the brown in the shoes.

#18. I love a casual look with jeans, sneakers, and a “beyond basic” sweatshirt, such as this rust pullover with the side stripe details. I paired it with washed black jeans and wore sneakers with black accents.

I also wear it a lot with blue jeans.

#19. Another option for a beyond basic sweatshirt is this navy stripe hoodie. I love how it pairs with blue jeans and sneakers, and I also like it a lot with this rust shirt jacket on top.

#20. Stripes are trending big time again this fall, and I am so happy Rails brought back their Geneva Cardigan this season. It pairs perfectly with black or blue denim.

#21. When I want to level up my jeans for dinner with my husband or girlfriends, this is my typical fall uniform: A great pair of jeans, upscale blouse or sweater, heels, and an edgy jacket. I love this faux leather bomber; it’s warm and comfortable and super chic, and it comes in brown and black. I wore this a few weeks ago in Tennessee, and I brought my brown bomber along, in case it got chilly.

#22. This is a variation on that theme, wearing the same jeans, but with a green silk cowl neck blouse and leopard print slingback pumps.

green cowl neck top (S) // dark wash flares (30) (option) // leopard pumps (8.5) // similar crossbody // love knot earrings // link necklace // chunky link bracelet

#23. Here, you can actually see me wearing the brown bomber! I wore this outfit last weekend to a show in Philly.

#24. When in doubt, I love to put together an all-black outfit. The key is to mix different textures to keep it from looking too flat, and then be sure to accessorize appropriately for the occasion. The luxe knit, leather jacket, washed black denim, and suede booties all work together beautifully in this edgy-luxe look. Plus, the oversized black sunglasses, chain link hoop earrings, and layered necklace add essential style points to make it look even more intentional.

#25. And this is the oldest outfit in this post, going all the way back to the fall of 2020, but I still love it and would wear it right now — just in my new bigger sizes. #thanksmenopause

And that’s a wrap! I hope these fall outfit ideas help you expand your closet and get more wear out of what you already have.
